The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) serves as the central institution of the Federal Government in the field of public health and as the national public health institute. As part of its efforts, RKI has developed the CovPassCheck app on behalf of the German Federal Government. This app allows for quick and secure verification of the EU's digital COVID certificates, ensuring that individuals possess valid documentation. Importantly, all checks are performed without the exchange of sensitive information or data.

Functioning as a tool to check vaccination status, recovery from a prior infection, or negative COVID test results, the CovPassCheck app plays a pivotal role. When users examine an individual's digital certificate, only the necessary information and data are displayed within the app itself. The certificate's QR code provides evidence of full vaccination coverage or recovery, with additional details such as name and date of birth to aid identification during checks.

For negative test results, the QR code also indicates the time of testing. However, it is important to note that current test certificates are not considered EU digital COVID certificates. To convert a test result QR code into an EU digital COVID certificate, users must utilize the Corona Warning app. The CovPassCheck app allows for sequential scanning of multiple QR codes with ease and does not impose a requirement for an ongoing internet connection.

To prioritize data security in accordance with the DSGVO regulations:
- The CovPassCheck app does not entail any registration process or collection of sensitive data via email addresses.
- Data storage is exclusively limited to the smartphone of the individual being checked.
- In terms of data usage, only essential information such as the certificate's status, name, and date of birth are displayed after scanning the QR code.
- The QR code itself is fortified with a cryptographic signature to deter forgery attempts.
